EMOTIONAL.
In honor of ordinary mothers, doing extraordinary things, APOOO is hosting an Every Day is Mother's Day Tour during the month of May. I was invited to participate in the tour and I jumped at the chance to honor my mother! Please leave a comment! Tell me what makes YOUR mother special!
This poem is dedicated to my mother, Patsy Ruth Nash. She is the light in my heart. Everything that I am, I owe to GOD for choosing her for me.
The Breakfast Club
By Ebony Farashuu
We thought it was the coolest thing…
Breakfast for dinner.
Captain Crunch, scrambled eggs, pancakes or French toast
It has to be one of the most
Profound memories from my youth.
“Hey, Girls, how about cereal tonight?”
She would ask.
And us girls…we would be overjoyed
Cuz only a mama as great as ours would even think to toy
With the idea of pulling out the Rice Crispies
And three bowls
And three spoons
And a carton of milk
And allow her kids to do what the other kids on our block could only dream about.
We didn’t know then that her smile was one of relief…
Relief that her girls didn’t question
Why we weren’t having pork chops like the Smith’s
Or
Why we weren’t eating fried chicken like the Johnson’s
Or why we were having cereal for the third day in a row.
We didn’t know that sometimes…cereal was all mama had to feed us.
We didn’t know that Mama sometimes lied when she said…
“Oh, baby, Mama isn’t hungry.”
We didn’t know that Mama sometimes cried, wondering where our next meal would come from.
What we did know, what that she was the best!
We only knew that we were blessed
And she set an example for us through her hard work and dedication to her family!
Eventually, breakfast was served only at breakfast
And our evening meal was fit for the Queens she raised us to believe that we were!
But sometimes…She still let us eat cereal for dinner
Just because she could.

That's a beautiful poem Ebony.
As you know I lost my mother last year. But I sent her Mother's Day wishes in heaven. She was my heart.

Ebony that was beautiful. It's ironic what we will do for our children, secretly praying that they go with the flow and not ask any questions.
My mother is special because she's my mom not for anything other than that.
Good morning Ebony and thanks so much for participating and sharing such a poignant story. Just goes to show what mothers won't do for love when it comes to their kids...they give us that unconditional love that no one else can but God!
xoxo
Ebony,
This is a great poem and truly a wonderful tribute to your Mother. This poem makes one see that we should not take our Mothers for granted. I am sure that many of us can relate to the story in your poem.
This poem actually shows the sacrifices that one is willing to make for her children and she never is really given enough credit for those sacrifices, but she makes them anyway.
This poem personally puts a lot in perspective for me and I really do appreciate you for writing such a lovely poem. I am sure that your Mother is very proud.
Much continued success to you and please keep up the good work.
My mother is one of a kind. She cooks for everybody and looks after so many people I feel everyone is family. No one left unnoticed. She is my jewel and my rock. If you need a mother.....while she is available to share more love.

As a child, I too thought breakfast for dinner was the coolest concept my mother could have EVER come up with!! I loved the evenings when we would have pancakes...or grits & eggs...bacon -- oh it was great.
The sacrifices mothers make for their children on a daily basis is something that cannot be measured or quantified...it can only be appreciated.
Love to YOUR MOTHER and to YOU, as a MOTHER.
God Bless
the best memories make the best writes. Thanks for sharing with us.
What makes my mom special is the fact that she raised 3 children by herself, in Brooklyn, without either one falling to the streets. I admire her tenacity toward failure...it never existed.
Keep writing sis...you do a marvelous job.
Loved the poem!
I loved this tribute Eb. Isn't it funny how children remember things. As long as they are loved they thrive - whether it be on Captain Crunch or oatmeal. (My Mother says we ate that for a month straight saving for our first house and we never complained - heck I don't even remember that - if it was what Mamma put on the table we ate it, did the dishes and high tailed it outside to play until the street lights came on) No matter what was happening as a child I always felt safe and secure because of my mother. Wonderful tribute - brought back memories. Had to call my mom.
Love ya Sis.
Terri
